Augsburg, 17 November 2025 – German Bionic Systems GmbH (German Bionic), a global leader in the field of AI-supported robotics and smart exoskeleton systems, has filed an application to open insolvency proceedings. Last Friday, the Local Court of Augsburg ordered preliminary insolvency proceedings over the company’s assets and appointed attorney-at-law and restructuring expert Oliver Schartl from the law firm Müller-Heydenreich Bierbach & Kollegen (Augsburg) as preliminary insolvency administrator. Business operations with around 70 employees continue without restriction; an investor process will be launched shortly.

“Despite very positive revenue development and a dynamically growing market, we were confronted with the unexpected withdrawal of investment commitments. The failure of a final financing round triggered a liquidity shortfall that made filing for insolvency unavoidable,” Managing Director Armin G. Schmidt said on Monday. “A structured process is now necessary to secure the company’s ability to act economically and to protect the value that has been created,” he explained. The start-up had expected to reach break-even in summer 2026.

Extensive patent portfolio and established market position

At the core of German Bionic’s corporate value lies cutting-edge technology developed in Germany, based on robotics and applied artificial intelligence, which sets international standards and has been marketed worldwide for many years. Together with a substantial patent portfolio and a highly qualified team at the Augsburg and Berlin locations, the company has a strong technological and personnel foundation that defines its leading position in the global market. In addition to already established products – such as EXIA, an intelligent power suit – this innovative strength opens up significant potential for new application areas.

Preliminary insolvency administrator Oliver Schartl is now working together with the company’s management to stabilize business operations and find a viable, future-oriented solution for German Bionic and its employees. The insolvency has no impact on the global customer base or on systems already deployed in the market.

Investor process to begin shortly

“We will shortly initiate a strategic investor process to find a suitable investor. Given the fact that the product is a technological leader, already established worldwide, and that German Bionic has highly qualified personnel, I see good chances of achieving this already in the first quarter of 2026,” said Schartl. The aim is to preserve German Bionic’s strong international position under a new investor, to continue developing the company over the long term, and to maintain the Augsburg and Berlin locations along with the associated jobs in Germany.

High tech – Made in Germany – that serves people

German Bionic’s solutions are designed around technologies that put people first.. They support workers in physically demanding occupations who are exposed to significant physical strain in their daily work – for example in logistics, construction, skilled trades, or healthcare. The company’s exoskeleton systems provide immediate relief, improve ergonomic conditions, and help protect health and performance over the long term. At the same time, the underlying technology forms the basis for new generations of socially relevant augmentation systems that will become increasingly important in the context of an aging population, rising skilled labor shortages, and growing demand in the health and care sectors. In this way, German Bionic makes an important contribution to making work more human-centered, safer, and more sustainable.
